People often find themselves without a birth certificate at a time when they need it the most. Sometimes the task is put off because they don’t know how to obtain a birth certificate or where to go to start the process. Once the day rolls around when they really need it, the question of where to turn becomes even more problematic. There are some differences between states about the offices that supply copies of birth certificates, but the rules for who is eligible to receive one typically are the same. Before you rush off to your local issuing office, ask yourself these questions to see if you qualify.
  • Are you the person who is named on the birth certificate?
  • Are you a parent of the person named on the birth certificate and does your name appear on the birth certificate?
  • Does your state allow a spouse, child, or other person to get a birth certificate and are you a qualifying person?

When President Barack Obama was questioned about his birth certificate, it became quite evident that another person’s birth certificate is not made available to the public. In fact, your birth certificate is as much a personal document as it is an official one. No-one is permitted to just “pick one up” because the want to find out something about the individual or to satisfy a curiosity. Once you know that you will be able to obtain the document you need, the next step is to learn where to obtain a birth certificate within the birth state. Depending on the state, this can be difficult to do. Some states have very lengthy processes for ordering a copy of a birth certificate. In addition, some have exceptionally long processing times that can have you waiting much longer for a birth certificate than you imagined.
