Dual Citizenship—What Does It Mean?

Dual citizenship is when someone is a naturalized citizen of two countries at the same time. In the U.S., there are many ways in which a person can acquire dual citizenship. For some, the status is granted at birth. For example, those born in the United States to immigrant parents are automatically dual citizens. The same is true for someone who is born outside of the U.S. but has one parent who is a U.S. citizen and the other is a citizen or another country. In this instance, the child becomes a citizen of both countries.
There are also scenarios when a person can choose to become a dual citizen. For example, if a person becomes a naturalized U.S. citizen, they can still maintain citizenship in their home country. Dual citizenship is also granted if a person regains citizenship in their home country after becoming a naturalized citizen in the U.S.

Birth Certificate for a Dual Citizen

If you are born in the U.S. and become a citizen of another country, your original U.S.-issued birth certificate remains the same. However, for persons born outside of the U.S. who are U.S. citizens, the process is a little more difficult.

For those born overseas, notification of the birth must be coordinated with the local U.S. Embassy or consulate in the country. Since abroad, a standard birth certificate cannot be provided. Instead, parents must submit a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) Form. It's also advised that parents apply for a passport for the child as well.

Once the CRBA is processed, the document serves as the person's claim of citizenship. The form serves in the same capacities as a standard birth certificate. The CRBA states the birth country but identifies the person as a U.S. citizen.

It's good to know that your birth certificate will be the same after becoming a citizen of another country. My wife was born in America but might have Italian ancestry, and she wanted to know if she applied for dual citizenship. It might be a good idea to find a website that contains records of her family.
