A certified birth certificate is an official document that contains a person’s personal information. As a legal document, it can be used as identification for getting a driver’s license, getting a marriage certificate or passport, and for other important situations. Since birth certificate information contains legal information, it should be kept securely at home or in a bank vault.

What Information Is on a Certified Birth Certificate?

A certified birth certificate has five major categories of information: child’s basic information, place of birth, parents, certification of birth, and local registrar. Some birth certificates may look a little different, as different states might have different requirements. We’ll break these sections down here, using Stormi Webster’s birth certificate as an example!

Parts of a Birth Certificate

  1. Child’s basic information: This section includes all the main information about the newborn child, including the child’s first, middle, and last name. It also lists their gender, if they were a twin or single child, and the date and time of their birth. On her California birth certificate, we see that Stormi has no middle name, only a first and last: Stormi Webster. Stormi is recorded as being born female, with no twin, on February 1, 2018, at 16:43, which is 4:43 p.m.
  2. Place of birth: This is the hospital facility and detailed location where the child was born. For Stormi, that section of her birth certificate information states she was born at Cedar Sinai Medical Center, at 8700 Beverly Boulevard, in Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, California.
  3. Parents: This section may have both parents listed or only the mother if she doesn’t know the father or does not want his name on the certificate. Stormi’s parents are listed as Kylie Kristen Jenner, her mom, and Jacques Bermon Webster II, her father, who normally goes by Travis Scott. Stormi has taken her father’s real last name on her California birth certificate.

The parents’ names must be complete, with first, middle, and last names included and where the parent themselves were born. According to Stormi’s birth certificate, Kylie was born in California on August 10, 1997, and Jacques (Travis) was born in Texas on April 30, 1991.
  4. Certification of birth: This is the more legal section of the birth certificate, including signatures of parents and attendants, license numbers, and the name of the attending physician. On Stormi’s birth certificate, some of this information has been blocked out for her privacy. We can, however, see that the doctor who delivered her was Dr. Thais Aliabadi. A supervisor has also signed the certificate.
  5. Local registrar: For filing purposes with the government, this section includes signatures and dates, as well as a state filing number. On Stormi Webster’s birth certificate, we see that the local registrar's signature is blacked out, but that it was signed on February 8, 2018, and that the certificate was officially issued on that same day.
