Two Ways to Get a Birth Certificate in North Carolina
The Old-Fashioned Way:
To get a certified copy of a North Carolina birth certificate, you must fall into one of the following categories:
1. The person named on the certificate, or the person's sibling, spouse, direct descendant/ancestor, stepchild, or stepparent.
2. A legal representative of the person named on the document.
3. Someone searching for information relating to "a legal determination of personal or property rights."
Uncertified copies are available to the general public, provided that there are no applicable legal restrictions. These copies are stamped "Uncertified" and are not acceptable for legal purposes.
Requestors must possess a current, valid photo ID from the following list and send a copy along with their application:

There is a charge of $24 for a certificate, and additional copies are $15 each. Payment can be made by money order, certified check, or business check (no personal checks).

- State-issued non-driver photo ID card
- U.S. military ID
- Passport or visa
- Department of Corrections photo ID card (dated inside the last year)
- State or U.S. government agency photo ID (if requestor is acting on behalf of the agency)
- Student ID card w/ copy of transcript
Alternatively, the requestor can send copies of TWO of the following items. All copies must bear the requestor’s current address:
- Temporary driver’s license
- Car title or registration
- Current utility bill
- Bank statement
- Pay stub
- Income tax return/W-2 form
- State-issued concealed weapon permit
- Letter from a government agency dated inside the last six (6) months
You must also complete the application form.
